Things to do at Helsinki Airport

Restaurants & Cafés

There are plenty of restaurants in Helsinki Airport, in particular after security. For lovers of Finnish and Nordic cuisine, Nordic Kitchen is a recommended restaurant in the Schengen area close to Gate 35. There is a food/drink serving area with a view towards the airfield, called Pier Zero, near Gate 40, in the non-Schengen area.

Burgers and beverages are popular dishes and drinks at the sports bar O'Leary's. There will be fast food available at Burger King and Subway at the airport.

Robert's Coffee is a Finnish brand of coffeehouses, providing coffee, pastries and light foods. Espresso House has to have a coffee/snack bar.

There are also cafes and restaurants located in the arrivals areas as well as the public areas of the airport. When selecting a restaurant, be sure to find out the gate location. If someone wants to cross the border between the Schengen area and the non-Schengen area, or vice versa, avoid eating in the non-Schengen area if travelling in the Schengen area, and avoid eating in the Schengen area if travelling in the non-Schengen area.

Shops & Lifestyle Stores

This is one of the finest places to buy Finnish design, local food products and international duty-free items at Helsinki airport.

Passengers have the opportunity to buy fragrances, cosmetics, confectionery, alcohol and travel products from the shops in duty-free areas at the departure points.

The most popular shops in the airport are “Moomin Shop”, which has souvenirs with Moomin characters. A great area for gift shopping, book and souvenir sales.

Marimekko's speciality is Finnish fashion, home products and bags, while Iittala's is glassware and design. Suomalainen Kirjakauppa is a bookstore and a travel goods store for travellers.

The arrivals hall has a good drink, snack and general shop in the hall called Alepa. This will be very convenient while travelling to and from the hotel/train.

Relove is a blend of a café, second-hand fashion and one of the more unusual concepts of the airport. Also, access to shops in public areas and in Schengen and non-Schengen areas, so please check on access before approaching the shop.

Lounges & Relax Spots

There are several lounges in Helsinki Airport, so the travellers will have to select one of the real lounges, depending on their departure point.

Passengers will be able to take advantage of the Finnair Lounge in the Schengen area on qualifying Finnair flights from the Schengen area. There are also lounges for those who will fly on longer-haul flights, in the non-Schengen part of Finnair.

Eligible / Paying passengers are able to book seats in Plaza Premium Lounge. The opening times and entrance may be subject to change – please call before visiting.

The airport is also equipped with a quiet space, a sleeping/resting space and a work space. Travellers will always be reminded of additional checks when moving between the Non-Schengen Zone and the Schengen Zone, and vice versa, and will be reminded to enter/exit from the appropriate Lounge.

Other Activities & Unique Features

The airport in Helsinki is as designed and as passenger-friendly. The noisy seats in the gates have been replaced by quiet seats and work pods, and throughout the Terminal, Art installations have been installed.

Children's play areas are available for the families' free use at the airport. The terminal has also constructed facilities for the pet owner to ease their pet's discomfort.

The Stay buildings, Hilton Helsinki Airport and Scandic Helsinki Airport are located close to each other in the terminal; one is located just a few metres from the other. GLO Hotel Airport is situated in the airport complex, so that short night connections are possible.

Suggested Layover Itineraries

3-hour layover

Complete transfer of processes. Transfer all your processes first. Grab a bite to eat at Nordic Kitchen or other restaurants available in your departure area, wander around the shops of Finnish design and stay near your gate.

5–6 hour layover

Savour a proper meal, buy Finnish products at Marimekko, Iittala or Moomin Shop and utilise an eligible lounge. The airport itself could be the most convenient place to stay.

8+ hour layover

If a longer period of time, it's possible to take a trip to central Helsinki. The airport train makes it feasible, but don't depart if immigration guidelines, bag check and the amount of time required for your connection are not generous enough.
